
Sam Bankman-Fried Moved to Oklahoma Prison Transit Facility — WSJ
By Alexander OsipovichDisgraced cryptocurrency tycoon Sam Bankman-Fried has been removed from the federal jail in New York City where he has been held since August 2023, after officials started the process of transferring him to a prison where he will continue serving his fraud sentence.The Federal Bureau of Prisons website showed early Thursday that Bankman-Fried was at a transit facility in Oklahoma City that often houses inmates being moved across the country. Until Wednesday, he had been at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he recently recorded an unsanctioned jailhouse video interview with Tucker Carlson, part of a long-shot bid to win a pardon from President Donald Trump.A lawyer for Bankman-Fried didn't respond to a request for comment.Bankman-Fried was woken by prison officials at around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning and taken out of his unit at the Brooklyn MDC, a person familiar with the matter said, adding that the officers did not tell him where he was going.A spokesperson for the prisons bureau declined to comment.The 33-year-old FTX founder's legal team has pushed for him to serve out his sentence in California, so he can be closer to his parents' home near Stanford University.The bureau's website shows that Bankman-Fried has a release date Nov. 17, 2044, meaning he is set to serve a total of just over 21 years. Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years following his conviction on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy, but sentences can be reduced by up to 15% for good behavior.Prosecutors say Bankman-Fried carried out one of the largest financial frauds in U.S. history, stealing billions of dollars from FTX customers and defrauding investors and lenders to his crypto investment firm Alameda Research.This item is part of a Wall Street Journal live coverage event.
