Cloudflare and Coinbase launch x402 Foundation to drive agent payments
Cloudflare, one of the largest content delivery networks worldwide, is partnering with crypto exchange Coinbase to launch the x402 Foundation, aimed at promoting adoption of the x402 protocol, a framework for machine-to-machine value exchange on the web.x402 introduces an open protocol to standardize payment negotiation between websites and automated agents. The x402 protocol updates the long-unused HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code, giving developers a standardized way for websites and digital agents to negotiate payments without relying on accounts, subscriptions, or API keys.Under the system, a client requesting access to a resource receives a 402 response containing payment instructions, submits a payment authorization, and, once verified, gains access to the resource along with a payment confirmation. In a Tuesday blog post, Cloudflare noted that while Coinbase developed the x402 transaction flow, Cloudflare is releasing tools to integrate it into its Agents SDK and Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations.Potential use cases for x402 include AI assistants making one-off purchases across multiple merchants, agents paying per browser rendering session instead of fixed subscriptions, and autonomous traders buying high-quality real-time data feeds through micropayments.Future iterations of x402 are expected to support a range of payment methods, including credit cards, bank accounts, and stablecoins. Cloudflare is proposing a new deferred payment scheme for x402, which allows for delayed settlement and aggregated charges — ideal for scenarios such as batch processing or subscriptions.Cloudflare is a global network that acts as a reverse proxy between website visitors and origin servers, optimizing performance, improving security and reliability for millions of websites, applications, and services. It powers an average of 78 million HTTP requests per second and operates data centers in over 330 cities worldwide, with its network growing by tens of thousands of properties daily. From Coinbase's viewpoint, x402 unlocks the potential of autonomous AI agents by facilitating agent-to-agent, agent-to-business, and agent-to-user payments. It leverages Coinbase's expertise in stablecoin infrastructure for instant settlements.Disclaimer: The Block is an independent media outlet that delivers news, research, and data.
