Carter-Ruck UK lawyer cleared of disciplinary charges linked to OneCoin
By Sam Tobin A partner at London law firm Carter-Ruck on Friday won her bid to throw out disciplinary proceedings stemming from an allegation that she had made an improper legal threat on behalf of fraudulent cryptocurrency business OneCoin and its founder Ruja Ignatova.Claire Gill, a solicitor at Carter-Ruck specialising in defamation, privacy and data protection, previously represented OneCoin and Ignatova, who is known as the "Cryptoqueen" and is on the FBI's most-wanted list and remains at large. The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), which regulates solicitors in England and Wales, alleged that Gill was responsible for "an improper threat of litigation" sent in 2017 on behalf of OneCoin and Ignatova, which Gill denied.Gill's application to the independent Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal to throw out the disciplinary case was successful, with the tribunal ruling on Friday that Gill was unaware of the fraud when sending the letter and the SRA's case was "based on hindsight rather than evidence of professional misconduct".12775-2025 Solicitors Regulation Authority v Claire Frances GillFor the SRA: David Price KC and Nicholas HillFor Gill: Justin Rushbrooke KC, Richard Coleman KC and Samuel Burns
