Trump, CFTC Chair Selig expected at Wednesday White House meeting with crypto and prediction market executives
President Donald Trump is expected to attend a White House meeting on Wednesday with executives from the cryptocurrency and prediction market industries, two people familiar with the plans told The Block.Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chair Michael Selig is also expected to be there, one of those people said. The meeting is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which sits beside the West Wing, a person familiar with the planning said. That person said the session is intended as a kickoff for the CFTC's Innovation Advisory Committee, which holds its inaugural meeting on Thursday.Politico first reported on Thursday that the White House planned to host crypto and prediction market executives next Wednesday, citing three people familiar with the plans. That report said Trump's attendance was unclear.Bloomberg reported on Friday that Trump was expected to attend, citing a person familiar with the event, and that SEC Chair Paul Atkins would also be at the White House, according to an agency spokesperson. Semafor reported the same day that invitees include executives from Coinbase, a16z, Ripple, Chainlink, Kalshi and Paradigm, along with The Digital Chamber and Patrick Witt, executive director of the President's Council of Advisers for Digital Assets. Two days for crypto execs in WashingtonThe Innovation Advisory Committee meets Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET in Washington, with the public able to watch online, according to a Federal Register notice.Selig released the agenda for the meeting on Thursday. Its three sessions will cover crypto asset regulation, artificial intelligence and prediction markets.Selig named the committee's 35 members in February. They include Polymarket's Shayne Coplan, Kalshi's Tarek Mansour and Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, alongside executives from Cboe, CME, DTCC and Nasdaq. The meetings come as the crypto-focused Clarity Act has stalled. Senate Majority Leader John Thune filed cloture on the motion to proceed a week ago, setting a vote for 2:15 p.m. ET on the day after the Senate returns from recess, Sept. 15. Invoking cloture will take the governing body 60 'yes' votes and would not itself pass the bill.Prediction market oversight is the other open question; the meeting's agenda says "the respective roles of federal and state authorities in overseeing prediction markets" and "recent state litigation and enforcement actions" will be discussed. Selig has argued the CFTC holds exclusive jurisdiction over event contracts and has sued several states over their efforts to restrict Kalshi and Polymarket. Both platforms faced new hurdles this week. Baltimore sued Kalshi and Polymarket on Thursday over sports-related contracts, and a Washington state court ordered Kalshi the same day to halt most of its offerings there.Trump has already taken Selig's side in that fight. In May, he called exclusive CFTC jurisdiction over prediction markets "critically important" in a post on Truth Social. Donald Trump Jr., the President's son, is a strategic advisor to Kalshi and Polymarket and hasĀ invested in Polymarket through the venture capital firm 1789 Capital.Disclaimer: The Block is an independent media outlet that delivers news, research, and data.
