Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm's retrial has been pushed back to April 26, 2027, in light of his pending motion for acquittal.U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla ordered Tuesday that the retrial will begin on that day in the Thurgood Marshall Courthouse in New York, with a final pretrial conference scheduled for April 20, 2027.Storm, the co-founder of crypto mixing service Tornado Cash, was accused of facilitating the laundering of more than $1 billion in illicit funds. In August 2025, a jury convicted him on a count of money transmitting but did not reach a verdict on other charges related to money laundering and sanctions evasion.Prosecutors later requested to retry Storm on the two unresolved charges and were previously pushing for a retrial in October 2026. A guilty verdict on the two charges could carry a maximum sentence of 40 years for Storm.Storm filed a motion for acquittal in September 2025, seeking to have the charges against him dismissed. An oral argument was held in April, but the motion remains undecided. In a related filing in April, Storm's lawyers also pointed the court to a recent Supreme Court ruling in a copyright case against internet service provider Cox. The court found that Cox should not be held responsible for providing a service that some customers later misused for music piracy — a decision that Storm's attorneys said could have implications for his case."Prosecutors are supposed to protect American interests and go after people who broke the law," Storm wrote Tuesday in a post on X. "A jury deadlocked on the two most serious counts against me. And still SDNY won't stop, because this case was never just about me. It's about setting an example."ChainalysisIn his social media post, Storm cited Chainalysis' prior role as a Tornado Cash relayer to argue what he sees as a double standard in his prosecution.Court documents showed that Chainalysis — a blockchain analytics firm that helped the government build the case against Storm — operated as a Tornado Cash relayer in 2022 to earn fees. A relayer is a third-party service that helps users withdraw funds from the crypto mixer while keeping their addresses private."So the company that helped trace my 'criminal' transactions was itself profiting from Tornado Cash transactions, while I was prosecuted over software I helped create," said Storm.Chainalysis declined The Block's request to comment on Storm's case.Disclaimer: The Block is an independent media outlet that delivers news, research, and data.
