Rep. Rashida Tlaib Opposed Crypto Bill. But Her Retirement Accounts Held Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs
Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s (D-MI) latest financial disclosure has put a spotlight on an increasingly mainstream way to own crypto, .The Michigan Democrat reported up to $30,000 in the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF ) across two Schwab retirement accounts and as much as $15,000 in the Grayscale Ethereum Staking Mini ETF ) in her Roth IRA, the New York Post reported . That puts her disclosed crypto ETF exposure at between $3,003 and $45,000, based on the broad value ranges required in congressional financial disclosures. The holdings are notable because Tlaib voted against the CLARITY Act, a major piece of crypto market-structure legislation, when it passed the House in July 2025.In October 2025, Tlaib co-sponsored the Ban Crypto Corruption Resolution, which is “Calling to ban the use of public office for personal enrichment through cryptocurrency ventures and calling for measures to prevent conflicts of interest and foreign influence in politicians’ digital asset activities.”Bitcoin Exposure Came Through Retirement AccountsTlaib’s disclosure shows IBIT in both her Schwab Rollover Traditional IRA and Schwab Roth Contributory IRA, with each position valued between $1,001 and $15,000.The filing indicates the IBIT purchases occurred on April 28 and May 29, 2025, alongside rollovers of two employer retirement plans. That distinction matters: the disclosure does not show Tlaib buying Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) directly. Her reported crypto exposure is entirely through exchange-traded products. That is precisely where the ETF story becomes bigger than one lawmaker.BlackRock’s IBIT has become the dominant vehicle for U.S. spot Bitcoin exposure. The fund had almost $59 billion in assets, dwarfing smaller competitors.IBIT has also continued to attract substantial capital. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in roughly $1.9 billion last week, with IBIT accounting for a significant share of the buying, according to SoSoValue data.Ethereum Adds Another ETF TwistTlaib’s Roth IRA also held the Grayscale Ethereum Staking Mini ETF, giving her exposure to Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) through the fund that holds Ether and earns staking rewards. The fund had nearly $2.9 billion in assets.Together, the two products show how crypto exposure can now fit inside conventional investment structures without investors directly holding tokens, managing wallets or dealing with crypto exchanges.
