Moscow Exchange launches XRP futures in rubles, boosting trading options for Russian investors

Russia's largest stock exchange just added XRP to its growing menu of crypto derivatives, giving qualified investors a way to trade the token without ever touching a wallet. The Moscow Exchange (MOEX) launched perpetual futures contracts for XRP, Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, and Tron on September 22, with all contracts priced in US dollars but settled in Russian rubles. The new perpetual futures contracts carry the tickers you'd expect: XRPUSDF, BTCUSDF, ETHUSDF, SOLUSDF, and TRXUSDF. Unlike traditional dated futures that expire on a set calendar, these roll over daily with automatic position continuation, plus funding adjustments designed to keep contract prices tethered to their underlying indices.MOEX built the reference benchmarks in-house. The MOEXXRP index, along with counterparts for the other four tokens, was first calculated and published earlier in 2026.The margin requirements tell an interesting story about how MOEX views relative risk across these assets. XRP futures demand a 43% initial margin, nearly double the 22% required for Bitcoin. In practical terms, a trader needs to put up $43 for every $100 of notional XRP exposure, versus $22 for Bitcoin. All contracts are restricted to qualified investors under Russian regulatory frameworks, a classification that typically requires meeting income, net worth, or professional experience thresholds. This launch didn't come out of nowhere. MOEX has been methodically layering crypto products since introducing dated futures contracts in 2025. Monthly XRP futures were added in May 2026, making the perpetual contracts a natural next step in the product roadmap. The adoption numbers suggest genuine demand. More than 72,000 qualified investors have engaged with MOEX's crypto derivatives since the platform's crypto offerings debuted in summer 2025. Total turnover across these products has surpassed 600 billion rubles, roughly $7B at current exchange rates. The perpetual contract structure includes a funding mechanism with parameters set at K1=0% and K2=0.35%, which governs how payments flow between long and short holders to maintain price alignment with the underlying index. The 43% margin requirement for XRP is worth noting as a data point for how traditional financial infrastructure prices crypto risk. Most offshore platforms offer XRP perpetual swaps with far lower margin requirements, sometimes as little as 1-5% depending on leverage settings.
