Ethereum, XRP and Solana slide as hot inflation data rattles crypto

Ethereum, XRP and Solana all dropped on October 15, 2026. The trigger had nothing to do with blockchains and everything to do with a spreadsheet from Washington. The US Consumer Price Index for September showed inflation running at 3.7% year over year. Market analysts cited by Decrypt say macro factors, not crypto-specific problems, are what pushed altcoin prices down.Economists had expected the September CPI reading to land at 3.6%. Instead it came in a tenth of a point hotter, and it also climbed above August's 3.4% rate. The concern is simple. If inflation keeps rising, the Federal Reserve has less room to ease, and borrowing costs stay elevated for longer. That tends to drain enthusiasm for anything that sits at the riskier end of the investment spectrum.Ethereum fell below $2,400, a slide of nearly 5-6% on the day. XRP traded in a range of $1.30-$1.31, while Solana hovered between $101-$102. Both of those tokens posted declines close to 5%.Leverage made things worse. Total liquidations across the crypto market reached approximately $972 million over a 24-hour window, with long positions taking most of the damage. ETH accounted for the largest share of the wipeout. On October 14, Bitcoin spot ETFs recorded outflows of approximately $261 million. Ethereum spot ETFs lost around $130 million on the same day.Solana products saw minor outflows, while XRP funds actually logged a modest inflow. That XRP inflow is a small detail, but a telling one. It suggests at least some institutional buyers were willing to add exposure even as the broader mood soured. It was not enough to stop the token's price from falling roughly 5%, though. The 10-year US Treasury yield approached 5.3%, a level that represents multi-decade highs.Other forces were also in play. Geopolitical tensions, rising oil prices and a hawkish tone in minutes from recent Federal Reserve meetings have kept markets on edge. Earlier October volatility was also correlated with climbing oil prices and Fed signals pointing toward tighter policy.Analysts also noted that altcoins have been underperforming Bitcoin during this phase. The Federal Reserve's next decision is scheduled for October 28. A hotter-than-expected CPI reading raises the odds that policymakers lean toward keeping rates higher for longer.Approximately $972 million in forced closures in a single day signals that a lot of leverage had built up on the long side. ETF flows are worth watching as a gauge of institutional conviction. Continued outflows from the Bitcoin and Ethereum funds would suggest larger investors are trimming risk until the rate outlook clears. The split between XRP's small inflow and Solana's minor outflow shows that institutional appetite is not moving in lockstep across altcoins.
