El Salvador has not used public funds to accumulate bitcoin since June 2025, IMF says
El Salvador has not used public funds to accumulate bitcoin since June 2025, according to the International Monetary Fund, which said the country provided documentation showing that accumulation since then reflected private donations. The disclosure came as IMF staff reached a deal with Salvadoran authorities on the combined second and third reviews of the country’s 40-month Extended Fund Facility program. Subject to approval by the IMF Executive Board and completion of agreed prior actions, the deal would unlock about $140 million for El Salvador.Last year, the IMF said it would work to ensure the government’s bitcoin holdings remained unchanged as part of the program.President Nayib Bukele's government nevertheless added 8 BTC shortly after that May announcement, taking its holdings to 6,190.18 BTC, according to the country’s Bitcoin Office at the time.Months later in November, the country disclosed a 1,090 BTC purchase, worth about $100 million. That addition marked its largest single-day acquisition at the time and took total holdings to 7,474 BTC.The IMF’s latest statement does not provide a total for bitcoin accumulated through private donations since June 2025. The IMF added that no further bitcoin accumulation beyond the documented donations is expected. The fund also said El Salvador is working to improve transparency around bitcoin holdings across various wallets, while strengthening governance and risk-management in public-sector crypto-asset holdings. At the same time, the government has substantially unwound public participation in its Chivo e-wallet. Majority ownership and operational control have been transferred to a private operator, while the government has retained a minority stake and custodial responsibilities for customer assets.Bitcoin was approaching $81,000 on Friday, up 4.5% over the previous 24 hours, according to The Block’s BTC price page. Its market capitalization stood at about $1.6 trillion, with $42.6 billion in 24-hour trading volume.Disclaimer: The Block is an independent media outlet that delivers news, research, and data.
