Bitcoin recovers from $80,000 levels: What could move prices next

Bitcoin traded near $83,800 on Monday, October 12, recovering from last week’s decline towards $80,000 as major cryptocurrencies posted modest gains. However, the rebound remains tentative, with a stronger US dollar, elevated Treasury yields and uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s interest rate outlook keeping investors cautious. The focus now shifts to US consumer price index (CPI) data due on Wednesday, October 14, which could influence expectations for interest rates and the direction of risk-sensitive assets such as cryptocurrencies.Bitcoin, Ethereum prices todayBitcoin rose around 0.9% to approximately $83,700, while Ethereum gained about 1.2% to trade near $2,540, according to market updates shared by analysts. XRP hovered around $1.40 and Solana traded near $112.Gains extended across several major altcoins, including Avalanche, Chainlink, BNB, Dogecoin and Cardano. Tron was among the few large-cap tokens to trade lower.Among other tokens, Internet Computer, Filecoin and NEAR Protocol recorded notable gains in the daily update shared by CoinDCX, while Starknet was among the decliners. Starknet, however, had gained sharply over the preceding week amid developments around its blockchain plans.Minal Thukral, Executive Vice President–Growth and Crypto Business Head at CoinDCX, said Bitcoin’s consolidation around $83,600 reflected a lack of buying volume during weekend trading. The Crypto Fear and Greed Index fell to 58, indicating a more neutral reading of market sentiment in the update shared by the exchange. Why is Bitcoin recovering, and what could move prices next?Bitcoin’s rebound follows last week’s selling and liquidations in leveraged crypto positions. Prateek Gupta, Head of Business at Mudrex, said the cryptocurrency was trading near $83,500, with support from reports of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. However, institutional flows remain mixed. US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded net inflows of $21.1 million on October 9, according to figures cited by BitDelta India, following substantial withdrawals in earlier sessions. Ethereum ETFs saw net outflows of $56.1 million that day, extending their withdrawal streak.Purvang Mashru, Lead Analyst at BitDelta India, said the recovery had broadened across major digital assets, with nine of the top 10 cryptocurrencies advancing over the preceding 24 hours. He also highlighted elevated US Treasury yields as a factor shaping the market backdrop.Vikram Subburaj, CEO of Giottus.com, said ETF flows remained volatile, while elevated oil prices, dollar strength and uncertainty over the Fed’s next move continued to weigh on risk appetite.Nischal Shetty, Founder of WazirX, said high borrowing costs, energy prices and a strong dollar could constrain institutional participation in Bitcoin and altcoins, even as lower expectations of near-term monetary tightening offered some relief.Bitcoin price levels to watchAnalysts are watching the $82,000–$83,000 range as near-term support, with $84,000–$85,000 emerging as a key resistance zone.Avinash Shekhar, Co-founder and CEO of Pi42, said Bitcoin was showing signs of recovery near $83,800, but a sustained move towards $86,500 would be needed to indicate renewed buying momentum. He added that Ethereum was trading near $2,550, while XRP’s recovery from around $1.30 indicated buying interest at lower levels. A decisive move above $1.45 would strengthen XRP’s upward momentum.Riya Sehgal, Research Analyst at Delta Exchange, identified $84,000–$85,000 as Bitcoin’s key confirmation zone. A sustained breakout could bring $86,000–$87,000 into focus, while a fall below $82,000–$82,500 could expose the $80,000–$81,000 range. For Ethereum, Sehgal identified $2,565–$2,600 as the immediate resistance zone, with $2,515–$2,525 providing near-term support. These levels are technical reference points, not assured price targets. Trading volumes, derivatives positioning and institutional flows will help determine whether the rebound can extend.US CPI data: Why it matters for crypto pricesThe US inflation report due on October 14 is the next major scheduled macroeconomic trigger for digital assets.A higher-than-expected inflation reading could reinforce expectations of elevated interest rates, potentially weighing on risk assets. Softer inflation could support market sentiment by improving the outlook for monetary easing, although the reaction would also depend on other economic and geopolitical developments.CoinSwitch Markets Desk said Bitcoin remained below the $85,000–$85,500 resistance area, with dollar strength, bond yields and geopolitical developments continuing to influence the broader market.
