Binance Fallout Shows Crypto's Immune System Functions — Market Talk

The cryptocurrency industry's immune system is working, as evidenced by its response to the $6.3 billion Binance hack, StoneX analyst Mark Palmer says in a note. Issuer freezes, protocol pauses and a Layer 2 security council intervention all worked together to claw back or immobilize half of the stolen value hours after the breach occurred, the analyst says. That kind of capability didn't exist in 2014 and barely existed in 2022, he says. It's the direct product of stablecoin issuers' decision to build freezable compliant dollar tokens, governance and emergency brakes in the DeFi ecosystem and large exchanges holding segregated reserve funds under regulated custody, which became the norm after FTX collapsed, Palmer says.
