Anza Removes Floating-Point Operations From Solana Core Protocol in Stages

Solana core client developer Anza said it is gradually removing floating-point operations from the Solana core protocol. According to ChainCatcher, the first layer, SIMD-0391, was activated on mainnet beta at epoch 1026 and replaces floating-point calculations with fixed-point arithmetic in the Stake Program and validator client warm-up and cooldown logic.The second layer, SIMD-0607, has been proposed and is under review. It targets the runtime itself and aims to remove floating-point operations from inflation reward and rent calculation paths. Anza said floating-point operations can produce different rounding results across hardware, validator clients, and compilers, which may create consensus divergence and network liveness risks. The two upgrades standardize fixed-point arithmetic to eliminate that risk, and Anza said it will continue addressing floating-point operations in other paths.
